TIP: Use This Season to Help

The holiday season is an excellent time to think a little bit less about yourself and a little more about others.  It gives us a chance to reflect on the needs of others and seek opportunities to serve and help out.  Because it is a great time to serve and help, here are three suggestions of things that you can do to help others out:

1) Trees for Troops

As a part of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, the Trees for Troops program gives you a chance to provide our service members and their families with Christmas trees.  There are several ways to donated as outlined on their website.  This is a great way to bring the spirit of the season to those families that sacrifice so much.

2) Heifer International

Do you have a goat?  Do you know what a goat can mean to someone in the developing world?  Heifer International is an interesting organization that provides families with the life sustaining benefits of livestock in the developing world.  These donations make an enormous difference in their lives.  This is how the program works:

3) Feeding America

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love food.  What is unfortunate is that even in the United States we have far too many families that are going without.  Feeding America is working to change that.  They use the donations and volunteer efforts of people like you and I to help people have access to meals when they otherwise would not be able to.  Take a look at what your opportunities are to help with Feeding America.

The cool thing about service is that you and I can find ways to help in our back yard.  It does not need to be an international or major organization.  Find a local food bank or non-profit.  Look for people in need.  Let's take the time to make a difference in other people's lives.

Review: Evernote Android App and Desktop Interface

I think it is the ever-present battle that we all have... the battle to get organized.  I know I have tried lists, day-planners, PDAs, etc. and there is always varying success.  Sometimes I want to jot down notes, sometimes I want to organize plans, and other times I just want to scribble out some ideas.  That is why I have been pleased with the Evernote Android app and desktop program.  I have really enjoyed it because it is: mobile, sync-able and easy to use.

Mobility

I really appreciate being able to use the Evernote app on my phone because it allows me to jot down ideas or goals as they come without having to carry anything additional around (I used to keep a spiral notebook with me for those purposes).  It allows me to be inspired when I am inspired and not have to worry about missing a beat.

Sync-able

It is very convenient to have access to my "notes" on whatever platform I am using.  If I am working on my Macbook, I can jot down some notes there and then continue the notes on my phone at a later time.  Because the interface keeps everything synced up, it means that your access and mobility is increased.  This helps me as I have a very mobile lifestyle.

Easy to Use

The interface for Evernote is very intuitive and easy to manage.  I have set goals, made Christmas lists and managed inspiration all without a hitch.  I downloaded the app and was immediately able to start using it without feeling confused or lost.  This ease of use makes the app an even more useful tool.

Want to get organized or have a place to jot down notes and inspiration?  Check out Evernote!

REVIEW: Taylormade R11 Driver

R11 Driver:

For those of you thinking about purchasing a driver or think it would be a good gift, here is my review on the Taylormade R11!

Flexability: First and foremost the technology behind this driver is amazing and unique. You can make independent adjustments of both loft and face angle. Meaning that you can cure or lesson hooks and fades (open, neutral or closed face), plus adjust the trajectory of the ball +or- 2 degrees on the face.

Look: This 440cc clubhead has excellent contrast with a mat white crown and a black face, with the intent of making the club easier to aim. Another advantage to the white crown is that it eliminates the glare you might see with glossy black clubheads.

Sound: To some it may not make a difference, but to me it does... Never liked the silent drivers nor the empty can blow. The R11 has a sound that is not so loud and not so silent with a good balanced sound.Check out Dustin Johnson in this video just crushing it.

Overall I highly recommend this driver for any golfer... if anything it gives you the so wanted confidence just by looking at the thing. It should make a great gift or upgrade for you golf bag.

Make sure you fit the shaft properly according to your swing speed with your pro! Here is a little cheat sheet. Remember to Grip it and Rip it!

 SWING SPEED CONVERSION CHART
When a swing speed device is not available, this chart may be used to approximate swing speed based on driver carry distance or the club used to approach the green from 150 yards. (Based on average club lengths and lofts.)

Tip: Holiday Grocery Shopping...

With Thanksgiving coming up in just a few days, I have been doing my best to prepare.  I'm a huge fan of having a bunch of family and friends over while hosting a big meal.  However, there's nothing worse than having to get up and leave your company, drive over to the grocery store and pick up those last few items that you forgot to buy.

So, here's a tip to help you make the most of your holiday, enjoy your company, and avoid frantic shoppers at a crowded store.

-Plan your activities and your menu in advance.
-Make a list of what you need to buy.
-Check that list a few times.
-Go and do your shopping days in advance

Happy Holidays, and good luck this year!

REVIEW: Wind-up Knight Game for Android

While everyone lives for Angry Birds on their phone, there are plenty of other interesting games that you can download and try out.  Recently, I came across an interesting game called, Wind-Up Knight.

Wind-Up Knight is a fun little game that has a good balance between being challenging and visually stunning.  I have only gotten started on the game and tried out the first couple of levels, but it has been a lot of fun.  It is a side scrolling game, that quickly increases in difficulty.  As you move along you can add swords, shields and the hazards are increasingly more intense.

Here is where you download it in the Android Marketplace: Wind-Up Knight

Here is a video that walks you through a couple of initial reactions to the game:

Anything interesting?  Because this cat in Brazil can answer the phone.  And yes... Cats are taking over the internet.  It is just a matter of time...

TIP: Get Good Sleep

Here are some good tips I received from Health online on how to get some good sleep. Thought there were some additional points that are different from the same old same old.
  • Watch your caffeine intake not only at night, but also in the afternoon.. Some drinks containing high caffeine can still affect sleep even when taken before 4 pm.

  • Did you know some foods can promote sleep? I dont recommend eating a grand buffet before going to sleep, but a foods  that contain protein and amino acids can promote sleep, such as cookies and milk!

  •  Wind down and even stretch to get your body relaxed for sleep. Yoga poses can be useful prior to bed to ensure that your body is ready to hit the sack.

  • "you must now turn off all your portable electronic devices" .. How many times have a heard this prior to taking off... Same thing applies prior to sleep. Turn of the Iphone, Blackberry and say goodnight!

REVIEW: Snack Factory- Pretzel Crisps

What man doesn't love his snacks?  I know that I am a big fan (unfortunately), so I have been trying to come across healthy and tasty snacks that I can not feel so guilty about eating (I just cannot bring myself to always do the fruits and vegetables thing).  That is why I was pleasantly surprised when I came across Pretzel Crisps from the Snack Factory.  They are the incredibly tasty and relatively good for you in the snack department.  They come in three varieties:

My favorite flavor by far is the Buffalo Wing flavor.  As I already have a special place for buffalo wings in my heart, it was great to be able to incorporate a flavor I love into a tasty snack.  It is crisp and light but definitely not lacking in the taste department.  Here is what you need to look for at your local grocery store:

As you can see above, they are ready for the holidays with some sweet varieties.  I highly recommend stocking up and enjoying some Pretzel Crisps today!  Also, check them out on Facebook.

TIP: Start Reading!

One of the best things that families and couples can do is read together (that includes on an iPad, Nook, or Kindle).  Reading offers us the opportunity to find and escape and learn more about the world around us.  It also allows couples the chance to continue to get to know one another and learn from one another.  Here are a couple things that can help you read together more.

1) Create a schedule.

2) Rotate who picks the book.

3) Have fun with your conversations about literature.

I grew up in a family that loved books and it has been a great joy in my life.  While I do not read as often as I used to, I am grateful for the great books that I am able to read.  It is an enriching and exciting part of life.  Let us know what books you are reading so we can add it to our list.  Leave your comment below:

REVIEW: Granada Golf Course, FL

Granada Golf Course

This 9 hole course is located in the heart of Coral Gables and if anything is worth the walk.Surrounding the course are beautiful old Spanish built homes, nature and the original old club house. The course was the first 9 hole course in Florida dating back to the early 1900's.

The course is definitely  suited for beginner golfers with wide fairways and no water hazards. However, when the wind picks up, it can become challenging, specially coming back into the clubhouse on the last three holes.  But overall, you do not need to be Tiger Woods to enjoy the course. Most holes average  350 yard par 4's , including 2 par 5's and 2 par 3's.

Pricing is also a plus. You can take your time and walk the course for around $15 or even take a cart for $10 more. Coral Gables residents get an extra discount. Granada members take great pride in the facility.
Burger Bob’s, Granada’s 10th hole, is a favorite of the community. Residents can share stories and enjoy a wonderful morning, while enjoying a home-cooked meal.

Overall I rate this course an A for its location, pricing and surroundings. So go a head and "grip it and rip it"

INSPIRE: Boston Bruins Surprise a Soldier's Parents

I am amazed by the selflessness and willingness to sacrifice that is displayed by soldiers and their families.  It is humbling to know that there are people who are willing to offer of themselves in order to protect freedom and liberty.  Because of that, I love it when communities bond together in order to support the families of soldiers.  Take this video from the Boston Bruins game, for example.  The team surprised these two parents with their son who is on leave.  It is very inspiring.  Enjoy!

TIP: Daily Water Intake

How much water should you drink each day?

Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water.

So how much water do you need?

The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. For women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

What about the advice to drink eight glasses a day?

Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day." That's about 1.9 liters, which isn't that different from the Institute of Medicine recommendations. "8x8" is easier to remember just keep in consideration that all liquids, not only water, count as intake.

TIP: Why Friday Night is Date Night

Date Night Movie
One of the most important pieces of counsel that I received when I got married was to make sure to set aside Friday night as date night with my wife.  Even if the date does not turn out like that of Tina Fey and Steve Carrell in the movie Date Night, it can be fun and exciting.  Why is date night important?  Here are three things that have may a difference to my wife and I because of date night:

1) Time to Reconnect:

While this may be weird coming from a guy, I have loved the chance that I get to sit and talk with my wife.  Dating has allowed us to continue to get to know one another and learn more about why we fell in love.  We can laugh, tease, inspire and uplift one another as we take time to talk and enjoy the life that we have.  I love the fact that after going out with my wife, I feel more connected with her.

2) Time to Disconnect:

Life is really stressful.  My wife and I have schedules that are packed to the brim.  Because we have so much going on, it is great to have an evening that we can disconnect from it all.  We leave work and other responsibilities behind for a couple of ours and detach ourselves from the stresses of our lives.  This has helped us because it allows us to see one another as a refuge from difficulties instead of a cause of difficulties.

3) Time to Connect Four:

Remember how much fun it was as a kid to-

Date night is such an excellent time to just sit back and have some fun.  Life can be so busy and stressful.  It is necessary to take some time to step out and have some fun.  Go to a show.  Play some games.  Go to a local gala.  Go dancing.  Whatever it is... Just go out and have some fun.

Marriage isn't complete at the wedding ceremony.  You are combining two different people... Date night helps make that process even more fun.  So tonight... Go on a date!

Happy Hubby Cool Stuff: Who needs a boat anymore?

If you're into wakeboarding/skiing but you don't have a boat in the garage, there's still hope...

Happy Hubby Review: HTC Inspire 4G for AT&T

Recently, following the 5th major crash of my Blackberry phone, I decided it would be time to move on to a new phone.  With some help from my wife, I ended up going with the HTC Inspire 4G.  I have been amazed with the numerous apps, quick speeds, and intuitive interface.  Because it was a major upgrade over my Blackberry, I am extremely pleased with it.  Here is a view of the phone from the HTC website:

The first thing that I noticed when I started using the phone was how fast it loaded and restarted.  This efficiency has saved me a lot of time as I use my phone a great deal for work and pleasure.  The ability to load and switch apps has been extremely important to me and has made a huge difference.  Now, there have been times when the phone has slowed down because I was doing a lot all at once, but for the most part, it has been extremely efficient and quick.  The next benefit that I love is:

The phone is really slim.  It fits well in my pockets and, while it has a large display, is not overly cumbersome.  This have been a great benefit to me as I move around a lot and do not need to worry about the discomfort of an overly large phone.

The final thing that I have fallen in love with on my phone is:

All rights: Google, Used for Demonstration Purposes

THE ANDROID MARKET!  I love the selection of apps and resources.  There are so many programs that have help me and my productivity.  And they have Angry Birds! ;)  Because of how amazing these apps are, stay tuned for some forthcoming review.

Honestly, though... The HTC Inspire 4G is an excellent phone and I highly recommend it for those that are in the market for a new phone.  Is it an Apple slayer?  It just may be....

HUMOR: Black Friday's. Always Interesting

Shopping Tips for Black Friday (this is siwious)

Shopping on Black Friday can save you a lot of money on some big ticket items, but keep these tips in mind to improve your shopping experience:
  • Secure you spot: Make sure you arrive 3 days in advance to guarantee a complete experience and prime real estate....Location, location, location..You deserve this, you need this high def TV and nobody can get in your way, yes kids in Africa are starving and thirsty...but this is the good old USA,  so take the sick days off and get going! When you arrive scout the area for maximum coverage in case of weather and natural necessities knock on the door. Make sure you mark your spot. We recommend  sidewalk chalk to secure your stay, start by drawing a square big enough  for you, a tent, a and your pet. Write your name in the middle of the square and post a pic if possible. After the camp is set, start the countdown timer immediately, so you know exactly when to prepare for your march of triumph.
  •  Have enough supplies/equipment: Oh boy where do I start? Flashlight, propane, mesquit, water, cooler, hot dogs, helmet, gummy bears, baseball bat, Scooby Doo snausages for Spike and other snacks are a must to state a few. What happens when duty calls? You must stand  your ground at all costs and not surrender to a warm intruder  that at the last minute, may get in front of you because your were away dropping the kids off at the pool. Instead we recommend keeping a bucket and an empty bottle handy. Use the bucket for number two's (sand highly recommended), and the bottle for number one's. A cap is crucial to avoid spills (its not a good idea to stink up the place,,, but hey .. if it will spook the competition then have at it). The aim must be precise, so take a deep breath and keep it steady. The bushes may be an alternative as long as you have your spot in sight, plus the dirt could use an extra fertilizer for next spring.  Leafs are plentiful in bushes and can be used as an alternative  to the good old Charmin TP.
  •  Remember what you are here for! Don't start chit chatting and socializing in line.... bla bla bla. Don't share you food and your resources, this is war and to win you must be in perfect conditions. Do not feed the opponents children and do not be hypnotized by the little cute kitty eyes....You need all the energy and motivation you can get. When the door opens little kitty will turn in to a lion and leave you trampled. Instead keep focused.. if the rain or snow erases your chalk square, make another one... You can do this...and it has been done before.. trust yourself and you will be surprised of what you are capable of.. Use motivational songs like" Eye of the Tiger " or that annoying Friday song that goes something like:                                                                                                           "Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
    Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
    We-we-we so excited
    We so excited......Its Friday Friday"

  •      4. On your mark set go! Now is the time to bring out the big guns, to separate the boys for the men, the women from the granny's. Its go time. Wondering about the helmet and the bat? When the 10 second count down begins... grab the helmet and the bat (bat can be used to reach for items, bat your opponent  and if you get trampled it may be used as a cane) Now is the time to turn into "The Bus" and trample old ladies and soccer moms like its nobody's bidness. At the end of the day you will feel complete......Jobless but complete.

Conclusion: Days off $300, Supplies and Equipment $200, getting half off on a $150 dollar tent for next years Black Friday.......PRICELESS!

Am I missing anything? Post and I will update..

Happy Hubby Tips: Don't get stuck. Use these tips to jump start your car.

No matter how new your car may be, it is always a possibility to find yourself stranded with a dead battery.  So, I would suggest doing two things.  First, put a set of jumper cables in your car.  Second, learn how to use those jumper cables.

I came across a simple article and instructional video on eHow that teaches exactly how to jump start your car.  Enjoy!

    • 1
Read your owner's manual, as it will describe any peculiarities involved in jump-starting your vehicle.
    • 2

Pull a car with a charged battery next to the car with the dead battery, situating the two batteries as close together as you can without allowing the two cars to touch.
    • 3
Turn off both engines, pull out the keys, put both cars in park, engage the emergency brakes and open the hoods.
    • 4

Attach a red-handled/positive jumper cable clamp to the positive terminal (the one with the plus sign) of the charged battery.
    • 5

Connect the other red-handled clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
    • 6

Attach the neighboring black/negative cable to the car with the dead battery. Clamp it somewhere where the current can ground out, such as a bolt or bracket on the engine. You can also attach it to any metal, unpainted part of the vehicle's frame.
    • 7
Ground the other black/negative cable on the charging car, as described in the previous step. Be careful, as a small spark may be produced.
    • 8
Attempt to start the car that has the dead battery.
    • 9
Re-adjust the red/positive clamp on the dead car if there is no response; try re-clamping it to the terminal or turning it for a better connection. Keep trying to start the dead car.
    • 10
Once the dead car is running, remove the clamps one at a time in reverse order.
    • 11
Allow the jump-started car to run for half an hour in order to charge the battery. It will charge whether driving or idling.

Hope this was helpful. Be sure to equip your car with a set of cables!

Happy Hubby's Cool Stuff: Never Give Up!

Life can be challenging.  Sometimes we feel like we don't have the capacity to overcome.  Here is a great video to remind us that we can.  I hope you enjoy its message of hope!

Happy Hubby Review: Think your pushing weight? Check out my Scoop on this Protein

Hello mutants...!!

If you work out, or know anything about building muscle, you may have heard when training hard to gain lean muscle, you need at least one gram of protein per pound, per day... not to mention that it will also promote massive rapid recovery and energy...Yes you may be thinking eating one cow and 2 dozen eggs per day should do the trick...good luck there newbie..
What you do need is to supplement your diet with some sort of protein... (at least if you want to a quarter size of Coleman here)

I mostly do Whey Protein... great for after workouts at it absorbs quickly.. And my number one pick would be  Nitro Pro.   Why???  Lets get straight to the point.
NITRO-PRO

First of all ... while your grandmas regular protein powder that she buys from Walmart may give you 10, maybe 20 grams of protein per scoop max.. this baby will blast you with 30 grams. So, two little scoops will give you 60 grams.. you can do the math now...  This is exactly what you need. And when you compare the price with other brands that offer less protein per scoop, it makes a lot of sense.

Did I tell you that the stuff tastes good too? I like Muscle Milk and Lean Body for taste too, don't get me wrong ... this powder is just as good... plus it is  Enhanced with Nitrogen Retention co-factors, BCAA's & Glut-amine Peptides.  This is a buy for sure.. I highly recommend it! Comments welcome against this product!!!

Now go gain some biceps grasshopper!

Happy Hubby Review: Bontrager Ion 2, Bicycle Headlight

A few months ago I was feeling the need to get out and exercise.  I wanted a cardio workout that was low impact on my aging knees and gave me an excuse to get outside in the fresh air.  The solution I found was cycling.

However, my schedule and the amount of daylight has limited me to early Saturday morning bike rides.  These weekly outings are nice, but like most people, I wanted more of a good thing.  I needed to find a way to hit the open road (amongst the friendly traffic) on a week night.  So, I purchased a headlight for my bicycle.  It's a Bontrager Ion 2.
AMAZING!  It attaches right to the top of my handlebars and projects a bright LED beam far ahead.  On the base of the light there is a rubber, elastic band that stretches and wraps tightly around the bars.  It's easy to take on and off.

There are three different modes of light to choose from.  First a high beam of light, second a low beam of light, or third a flashing white light.  They are controlled by the single button on the top of the light, making it easy to change between modes while riding.

I'm impressed with how stable the light is on the handlebars while riding over rough roads.  I didn't have to reposition it at all during a ride.  The amount of light that projects from this small light is almost hard to believe.  It exceeded my expectation.  And I could tell that I was being noticed by the other cars on the road.  This seals the deal for me, since I was a little hesitant at first about riding my bike at night.

I am very pleased with this light and with what it allows me to do.  I highly recommend this to anyone.
